Lost on a Back Road (Revised)
by Lisa Marks & Michael Casali
VERSE 1:
I heard the sound of his Bronco tires
Churning up the gravel and teenage desires
Weatherman said it was record heat
That night in July when I jumped in the seat
Grabbed his ballcap and put it on
Smiled and said “Let’s get lost. C’mon!”
We tore down a dirt road, windows rolled down
That hat was lost to the wind and the woods all around.
CHORUS:
I lost more than a hat
On that old country back road
I thought that I’d found everything
My young heart could hold
But looking back down that back road again
I can’t get back what I lost in red dust on the wind
So much lost on that old back road
VERSE 2:
He turned down a muddy road and parked
It was black as sin out there in the dark
Moonlight glistened through a jug of glass
A gift from his uncle’s private stash
He kept beneath the seat, just in case
I couldn’t wait for my first taste
Wild cherry moonshine, in the summer heat
I lost my mind and my innocence in the back seat
CHORUS
I lost more than a hat
On that old country back road
I thought that I’d found everything
My young heart could hold
But looking back down that back road again
I can’t get back what I lost in red dust on the wind
So much lost on that old back road
VERSE 3:
There was no denying that sign on that stick
Up nights sick with worry, mornings just sick
Labor Day weekend I broke the news
I could never do what he wanted me to
Found out who I was on that day
As I watched his taillights fade away
I took a few wrong turns down that road
But thanks to God and family, I made my way home.
CHORUS (EXTENDED):
I lost more than a hat
On that old country back road
But now I’ve found everything
My young heart can hold
Things are looking up down this new path
Oh, I love the way she smiles at me from her car seat in the back
I was lost on that old back road
But in her eyes I found what matters most
