"Do You Know Who You Are?"
This song is dedicated to my Keys to College Success students at Ozarks Technical Community College. You guys rock!
“Do You Know Who You Are?”
VERSE 1:
You’re sixteen now, and you know everything
You’re an expert in all the latest gadgets
Your entire life’s on a screen
It’s on smart phones, YouTube, Twitter and tablets
And Facebook says you’ve got 500 friends
They’ve tagged you in photos all over their walls
You’re always up on the hottest trends
And you think you know it all
PRE-CHORUS:
But when the posts and Tweets are all gone
and your so-called friends have scattered
Will you know what really matters?
Oh, will you know
CHORUS:
Where your mama met your daddy
Your purpose on this earth
What truly makes you happy
How much the love of your family’s worth
Or how strong you can be
If the worst should come to pass
What will be your legacy
When you breathe your last
To answer the questions, just search your heart
Do you know, I said do you know, do you know who you are?
VERSE 2:
You’re finally graduating from college
You’ve got yourself a solid education
Your brain is stuffed full of knowledge
You can solve for x and spout off quotations
Now you’re waiting in line in your cap and gown
You’ve earned an impressive business degree
From one of the best damn schools around
And you just know that you’ll succeed
PRE-CHORUS:
But when your college years have faded
and your life’s a boring pattern
Will you know what really matters?
Oh, will you know
CHORUS
Where your mama met your daddy
Your purpose on this earth
What truly makes you happy
How much the love of your family’s worth
Or how strong you can be
If the worst should come to pass
What will be your legacy
When you breathe your last
To answer the questions, just search your heart
Do you know, I said do you know, do you know who you are?
VERSE 3:
You’re a bigshot there in your corner office
You’re the head of a major corporation
Designer suits pressed and flawless
Posh vacations in exotic locations
And your home is a castle with fancy cars
With a relentless drive to line your pockets
Yeah, you’re a business superstar
But all you know is the profit
PRE-CHORUS:
If the company folds,
Your life’s a shambles, your clothes in tatters
Will you know what really matters?
Oh, will you know
CHORUS:
Where your mama met your daddy
Your purpose on this earth
What truly makes you happy
How much the love of your family’s worth
Or how strong you can be
If the worst should come to pass
What will be your legacy
When you breathe your last
To answer the questions, just search your heart
Do you know, I said do you know, do you know who you are?
BRIDGE:
Now I’m not saying those things aren’t important
The friends, the diploma, the achievements and fortune
You worked hard to earn them
They make your life richer
But can you see the bigger picture?
Can you hear your life’s song
Like a familiar old guitar
Strumming its answer to the question
Do you know who you are?
CHORUS:
Where your mama met your daddy
Your purpose on this earth
What truly makes you happy
How much the love of your family’s worth
Or how strong you can be
If the worst should come to pass
What will be your legacy
When you breathe your last
To answer the questions, just search your heart
Do you know, I said do you know, do you know who you are?
Do you know, yeah, do you know, do you know who you are?
